Common Questions
How long should an obituary be?
For newspapers, keep it under 200 words to save on costs. For online memorials or funeral home websites, you can go longer (400-600 words) to include more personal stories and achievements.
What is "In lieu of flowers"?
This phrase is used when a family prefers donations to a specific charity or cause instead of receiving floral arrangements. It’s usually placed at the very end of the obituary.
When should I publish the obituary?
Ideally, 3-5 days before the service. This gives out-of-town guests time to make travel arrangements and ensures the community is aware of the dates and times.
Do I have to include the cause of death?
No. Many families keep that private. If you choose to include it, keep it brief and respectful.
What if I don’t have service details yet?
Use a “details will be shared soon” line and update later.
